My Grandfather
In the late 1890's my grandfather Gock Quay (also known as Gock Yik Fai), the fourth of Gock Pui Heen's six sons, left his village Chuk Sau Yuen in southern China to join his brothers, Gock Lok, Gock Cheun and Gock Son, in Sydney Australia.

Gock Lok had arrived in Melbourne around 1890 with little money and no English skills, and with little work experience he could not find a job so headed north to Sydney and found work in a market garden on the outskirts of the city. After 2 years he was able to branch out as an independent trader with his own vegetable barrow. His brothers then followed him to Sydney. They established a successful fruit business Wing On, and then returned to Hong Kong and Shanghai expanding into Department stores and textiles.
This Website
This website has been prepared especially for our four sons and their families and the generations to follow, ensuring there is a record of the Gock/Kwok relationship to Australia dating back to 1890. My decision to continue the family line in Australia was made in 1964 when Maunie & I and sons Stephen and Christopher left Hong Kong to settle in Sydney.
The Chinese character shown in red at the top of each page is Gock which was later anglicised to Kwok.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to my wife Maunie who spent many hours with my late parents prior to their passing in 2003 gathering data about the Kwok/Spliid family backgrounds in preparation for a book she wrote covering both hers and my family.
